RFOS Q&A

How long have you been training?
Since about 2001. I had to lie about how old I was in order to get a membership at the local gym. (You could join only at age 16 unless you had parental consent.) From there, my passion for resistance training was born, as I met the man who would become my mentor and confidant in the business. I trained religiously DAILY from the time I was 14. I loved the way my body felt and looked, and how well it responded to the training,

Granted, I was severely OVERtraining: Exercise was my form of purging, an aspect of my eating disorder. Nevertheless, I still trained like it was my job and my passion.

What would like to see done to help improve or promote the sport?
I'd like to see more women competing in the Bodybuilding division. With the expansion of Fitness and Figure and the advent of Bikini, Bodybuilding for women seems to be sidelined. I won't go so far as to say the sport is dying, but it's certainly not as popular as it once was. I hope to see more women Bodybuilders going for that ultra-ripped look at competitions.

What would you like to share about your last contest?
For the 2008 IDFA Canadian Classic, I didn't diet hard enough. I started 17 weeks out but didn't get serious until 12 weeks out — and that came back to bite me. I took for granted what it was like to diet (because I had never done it) and neglected to follow my trainer's advice about this. I was over-thinking the process of diet and training, and worked myself into too much of a stressball. I should've been more strict with my diet, discipline and willpower, AND should've practiced my posing more frequently and taken it more seriously.

Do you get negative comments from people with regard to your muscles?
It's not so much that my body/muscles receives the criticism. Rather it's that those closest to me — who know about my 10-year battle with eating disorders — worry about how the diet will effect me ... and whether I'll slip back into my old habits and mindset.

People don't generally make negative comments about my muscles. In fact, I
often get more praise than criticism. I think it's the whole ideology of competing in an aesthetic-based sport — and forcing myself down to an unhealthy level of leanness — that throws people off.

Have you ever surprised yourself with you own strength? Like you forgot you were THAT strong???
Absolutely! While in college studying kinesiology, my professor challenged us to not back squat (for various reasons) for 4 months. The concept seemed ridiculous at the time, but I took him up on the challenge and refrained. The first week after I graduated, I wanted to test my strength, and see how well his theory — that you CAN get stronger without back squatting — worked. So I got under the bar with 2 plates, and repped out 5, no problem. Then, I did it again for a second set. DEFINITELY not something I expected, especially given that I'd ONLY done front, split, and overhead squats for 4 months. No back squats.

How have you used your physical strength outside the gym, when it has come in handy?
Truth be told, my strength hasn't really come in handy outside of the gym. I'm a personal trainer, so I work a manual labour job, but that only applies to the gym. Carrying groceries to and from the car, picking up luggage; nothing really unmanageable. I always tell people, when they ask how strong I am: "My muscles are for form, not function."
