Athlete photos: Disappearing?? ... Prohibited?!?!?
Sep 15th, 2009, 8:11pm

From time to time, guide photos in the Athlete Profiles go missing.

Worse yet, these photos may be replaced with a warning about Prohibited Content. Of course, RFOS never publishes any photo that merits being banned for any reason.

So what's going on?

The short answer: It's the price RFOS pays for relying on free image hosting.

Each of these situations are caused by the image hosting service, not by RFOS.

Photos on RFOS disappear because the links to them no longer work. That happens either when the photos are deleted or when their location changes. Neither is supposed to happen on its own. But they do.

To ensure that photos and other images meet acceptable use guidelines, image hosting services regularly check stored content. With billions of images on their servers, these checks are completely automated.

When an athlete photo on RFOS is taken down by the hosting service for supposedly Prohibited Content reasons, the trigger for this is the file name. That is, the name of the RFOS photo file is the same as (or similiar to) one on hosting service's the list of banned images.

These prohibitions have NOTHING to do with the content of any photo on RFOS.
Which is why RFOS is able to restore all such mistakenly banned photos.

If you notice that an athlete photo is missing or if you see a Prohibited or Invalid notice in place of a photo, please PM either Jo or Mon.
