RFOS Q&A

How long have you been training?
Since 1999. I had a personal trainer who would try to get me to bench press the 10lb dumbbells. I didn't want to do that because I was afraid of getting big like a guy. It drove him crazy, but he wouldn't push it and respected my wishes. When I started to see my body change and actually feel the muscles in my back, I wanted to start lifting more weight. I thought "Not bad for a five-foot female!" My trainer (now my husband) competes, and I would go to each of his contests to support him. I saw the women on stage and thought how incredible their bodies looked! Never did I imagine stepping on stage in a bikini. I'm from Hawaii, so I'll strip down to a bikini at any beach. But doing so to get on stage seemed a crazy idea to me. After two years of heavy lifting I decided to enter my first Figure and Bodybuilding contest in Texas, where I now live.

What would like to see done to help improve or promote the sport?
As a figure competitor, I am also a wife, a mother, and work full-time. I feel this enables me relate to more women on many different levels. In turn, that helps promote our sport. My different roles let people know you can achieve a healthy fitness lifestyle while taking care of your family. As far as more promotion of the sport, I’m already starting to see supplement companies mention to the public that some fitness model is also a "mom of three, VP of a company" in addition to being in great shape. Positive promotion of our sport is so important, especially for our youth. You are always a role model to someone — whether or not you realize it.

What would you like to share about your last contest?
It goes better than expected when you win overall! Being evaluated by IFBB judges at the 2009 NPC Houston Amateur was very intimidating, but we all have to do what's needed in order to improve. Anyone who plans on competing at the Nationals should first do a contest that has Pro judges.

Do you get negative comments from people with regard to your muscles?
No, no one has ever said anything negative directly to me. When I’m out and about grocery shopping or running errands, people will stare. One guy asked me if I was an MMA fighter. That I took as a compliment!

Have you ever surprised yourself with you own strength? Like you forgot you were THAT strong???
Oh yes, many times — especially with my calves. I can keep upping the weight and feel like I could keep doing so. My calves love the weights. As a kid, I would have to walk at least a block uphill to my house from the bus stop. Imagine doing this from kindergarten through 10th grade: with books and a flute. Yeah, I was band geek — so what!

How have you used your physical strength outside the gym, when it has come in handy?
Mainly when doing sprint drills on a park hill near my house.

Any message for fans?
I am not a competitor who did lots of sports in my teens. I don’t think I’m sports inclined! I have a funny story about my attempt to play league softball. I joined a summer softball league when I was in the 7th grade. I was so bad at hitting that — I laugh about this story every time I tell it — when it was time for me to bat, all the OUTfielders would come IN. I played left field (or maybe it was right field) and was so bad at catching that all the batters would hit the ball in my direction. I remember praying, wishing, and hoping that a ball would not come in my direction; funny how it always did! Then to top it off, when I played neighborhood sports, I was always the LAST to be picked to be on a team.

Special thanks to my one and only trainer and nutritionist, my husband Charles Anderson. He is a wizard at what he does. Thanks as well to ALL of my wonderful clients. Their trust and confidence in my ability to help them get in better shape is the best form of flattery.
