RFOS Q&A How long have you been training? I had an early start: At the age of 14 I was introduced to the weight room and was hooked immediately. Although I had no idea what I was doing at that time, I loved how strong I felt. I loved the atmosphere and everything about the gym. I was an athlete all throughout high school, playing field hockey and basketball as well as running track. I continued playing basketball all the way through college. When I graduated with a degree in business I still didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. It was about a year after college when I finally realized that the one place I loved to be, and needed to be, was the gym. I became a certified trainer in 2002 and that’s when my interest in competing started to grow. I had pictures of women in
Oxygen magazine plastered all over my bedroom walls. I vowed that one day that would be me. I procrastinated on attempting that goal for about three years as I traveled quite a bit and even spent a year as a fitness director for a cruise line.
When I left life aboard ship — despite the fact that I was teaching hours of aerobics classes every week — I had gained at least 25 pounds and tipped the scales in the 170s. That was the heaviest I had ever been, and I was so unhappy with myself. I moved to San Antonio, Texas, in the spring of 2005 and it was there that I finally got tired of making excuses for myself and vowed to make my fitness goals a reality.
On July 5, 2005, I decided it was my time. I made the decision that day to sign up for a competition and just do it! I chose a contest that was 18 weeks away because I knew I had quite a bit of work to do. I hired a nutritionist and a trainer and became more focused than I had ever been in my life. As I saw my body change week by week, it kept me motivated. I was super strict with my nutrition and my training. When I stepped on stage late in 2005 at my first contest, the NPC John Sherman Classic, and placed first, every second was worth it in my mind. I was totally hooked and that little taste of victory convinced me that I could have a future in this industry.
I went on to win my second contest, the 2006 Ronnie Coleman Classic. After winning again I decided to see how I would do on a national stage. I competed at the 2006 NPC Junior Nationals but went completely unnoticed by the judges. It was a little disheartening, but in no way was I going to give up. I took some time away from competing and worked on developing my shoulders and arms, which I felt needed improvement. During that time launched my own business, Destined 2 Be Fit, had my own resistance-band workout DVD produced, and even put together an infomercial for my new business. Then I started getting the urge to compete again.
I decided at that point in time that I wanted to try competing in a different federation for which my body would be a better fit. I competed with FAME and won my Pro card for Fitness Model at my first contest in October 2007. I decided to continue competing with FAME and actually even promoted my own contest and sports expo in San Antonio, Texas, which took place in May 2008. I went on to win the FAME North American Championships in November 2007 and continued to their top-level FAME World Championships in 2008, where I also took home first place in the Pro Fitness Model division.
I was about ready to take some time away from the stage again, but I had been hearing so many awesome things about Paul Dillett’s WBFF. The more I heard the more, I wanted to compete. The prizes for winning WBFF events included photo shoots for magazines, including
Oxygen, which as you know was one of my main motivators for getting into the industry. There were also supplement endorsement contracts up for grabs, trips to the Arnold Classic, and other great prizes. Not to mention that many of the athletes who were competing were women whose pictures I had plastered on my walls in order to motivate me! I committed to doing the contest and it turned out to be a great decision: I placed first overall in Figure and third in Diva Fitness Model.
Over the years my training has changed, I’ve tried all different methods and styles and have developed a style that works for me. I am a big believer in muscle confusion principles. I constantly change up my routines so that I consistently challenge my muscles. When I’m working towards a competition, I incorporate a lot more cardio and high intensity movements into my training in order to reduce my body fat while maintaining my muscle.
What would like to see done to help improve or promote the sport? One thing that I love that is happening within the industry now is opening it up to a much wider type of physiques. With organizations such as the WBFF — who look for everything from bikini models to Figure athlete — and the NPC starting a new bikini division, this sport is opening up to a much wider range of audience. I love that because as competitors I feel that we have the opportunity to inspire the people around us to make healthier choices. With more women able to compete, that means a greater opportunity to motivate more people. My physique may be an inspiration to some people, but others may be more inspired by more of a bikini model look, or then again more of a bodybuilder look. Opening the competitions to so much more variety is one of the greatest things to happen in this industry.
What would you like to share about your last contest? [It was amazing! The WBFF is an awesome organization. I have tons of excellent opportunities as a result of the WBFF. Paul Dillett has put together an organization that is truly athlete focused. The prizes he offers at the contest are simply awesome. I won overall in the Figure division at the WBFF World Championships in September 2008 and received all this:
- A contract with Muscle Pharm
http://www.musclepharm.com - An expenses-paid trip to the Arnold Classic with Grizzly Fitness
http://www.grizzlyfitness.com - A photo shoot for
Oxygen magazine
- Coverage in
Inside Fitness and
Status Fitness magazines
Not to mention the fact that I was able to be up on stage with Fitness superstars, including Jennifer Nicole Lee, Tosca Reno, Melissa Hall, Katie Uter, and Tina Rigdon. I highly recommend the WBFF. You can get more information about the federation here:
http://www.wbffshows.com Do you get negative comments from people with regard to your muscles? Occasionally, but I get far more positive feedback than negative. The negative remarks don’t really bother me, I believe that people who choose to lash out and say cruel and hurtful things to those they don’t know typically have extremely low self-esteem and thrive on trying to tear someone else down. I don’t keep people who are like that close to me. Anytime I hear something rude or negative, the main emotion I feel is sadness that they are so unhappy and trying to project that out at others. I really do like my physique. I actually feel very blessed! I believe that God placed me on earth with a passion for the fitness industry and a purpose of helping others, and I couldn’t be happier!
Have you ever surprised yourself with you own strength? Like you forgot you were THAT strong??? Actually yes! It’s funny because I played basketball all through high school and college. I was a fairly good player back then, but I rarely get to the courts nowadays. Recently I had the chance to go shoot around. I was shooting the ball
over the basket for the first couple shots. It was so funny to feel how much lighter the ball seemed to me! I had a little bit of a wake up call recently, though. I had the chance to train with Greg Jackson and Jon Chamberg, two of the strength and conditioning coaches for UFC stars such as Rashad Evans and Georges St. Pierre. They kicked my butt! They had me doing drills where we were pushing a car up an incline at the top of an 11,000 foot mountain. Okay, there were three other people pushing as well. I didn’t feel very strong then! It made me realize that no matter how strong I may feel, there is always room for improvement!
How have you used your physical strength outside the gym, when it has come in handy? Being strong physically comes in handy every day! When I packed up everything I owned and moved from San Antonio, Texas, to Kansas City, Missouri, being strong certainly helped with all the packing and unpacking. I even realize how nice it is to be strong when I’m at the grocery store and can carry all of my groceries at once with no problem. Whenever I get to visit my niece, who is growing like a weed, it is so nice to always be able to pick her up and play with her!
