RFOS Q&A

How long have you been training?
I've always been active. My father is a martial artist, and my mother was into aerobics and tennis; they always encouraged physical fitness. I have been consistently training for about seven years after I had my son Malachi.

What would like to see done to help improve or promote the sport?
We need more spokeswomen who seem accessible to the general public. The big names are great and inspirational to those of us already in the sport. Average women would benefit from more accessible fitness superheroes. We also need more education and awareness in areas of fitness other than Bodybuilding. After all, not all fit women compete in Bodybuilding. There are Fitness models, Fitness competitors, Bodyfitness athletes, Tri-athletes, and so on.

What would you like to share about your last contest?
Bodyfitness is still very new in the Caribbean and in Trinidad and Tobago in particular; they're still working out what the ideal Bodyfitness "look" is.

Do you get negative comments from people with regard to your muscles?
In my experience, the comments have mainly been positive. Many women admire my toned arms or defined legs. When I wear my two-piece on the beach, well, there's a lot of admiration. Wink Of course there have been negative comments here and there — but they have been few and far between. Many men find it quite sexy. It's important to me that I continue to look feminine.

Have you ever surprised yourself with you own strength? Like you forgot you were THAT strong???
All the time!!!! Sometimes when I'm rough-playing with my brother or husband and I land a punch or a kick that knocks the wind out of them ... I'm like, heck, yeah!!!!  Cool

How have you used your physical strength outside the gym, when it has come in handy?
I've always used my strength outside the gym from early childhood until now. I grew up in a family of girls. When there was a water shortage, I would have to carry two 30lb buckets of water uphill. These days anything physically demanding is up from alley: from helping my in-laws move all their heavy appliances to turning the mattress.

Any message for fans?
Learn to appreciate the time, effort, and love that goes into the sport. Not all bodybuilders or fitness athletes use drugs. In fact, most of us don't. We dedicate hours to educating ourselves about the body and its requirements for building muscles and stay lean. Oh and don't be negative when you are in the audience at a contest.

Any other comments/views you would like to share?
I am an ACE certified personal trainer. I'm pursing my certification as a consultant in lifestyle and weight management. I also have an Associate Degree in exercise science. Presently I am available only to local clients, but also do telephone consultations. I work out of the Long Circular Health Club. My specialty is women's fitness, and I am available for at-home training and consultations.

I am currently pursuing my Associate Degree in management and will one day own the finest women's-only fitness and nutrition facility and spa.

I'd like to thank God for directing me into my destiny. Thanks also to my husband Anatole Branker (my greatest supporter), Shermaine Bernard and Carla Pillai, the Trinidad and Tobago BodyBuilding and Fitness Federation, and to my son Malachi Branker — my biggest fan and personal trainer.

All these pictures were taken my husband, Anatole Branker.
